    This session aims to provide theoretical knowledge to enable Healthcare Assistants and Nursing associates in General Practice to assist in wound care in a safe, confident manner according to current standards and guidelines. It is also suitable for practice nurses who are new to wound care in General Practice and wish to develop their knowledge and skills including related policies and guidelines, wound care formularies and the latest evidence based treatment pathways. It aims to discuss wound care assessment, management and dressing choices.

    • The general principles of wound care
    • Factors that delay and promote wound healing
    • Different types of wounds and approaches to management
    • Pressure ulcers- grading and staging of wounds
    • Different dressings, how they work and when to use
    • Recognising signs of infection and deterioration- NEWS score
    • Relevant policies and procedures
    • Suture/clip/staple removal
    • Assessment of wound and communication with patients- TIME model
    • Aseptic technique Vs Clean Technique
    • Infection control and safe disposal of equipment
    • Accountability- scope of practice
    • Appropriate documentation of procedure
